I can't make a back up disc because my burner is not working and my computer doesn't recognize the usb ports anymore.I know how to fix these problems but to do that I need to erase my hard drive and I want to back up my files first. Are there any programs that come with an installation disc that will back up my pc without needing to hook up a usb cable?I need to save my data files and my paid for and installed programs.

Click on start-->All programs-->Accessories-->System tools-->Backup

Create the backup in the specified drive location only if your hard drive is partitioned. If your hard drive is not partioned and you erase ur drive, then backup file will be deleted.

To backup, get some external storage - an external hard drive or flashdrives.

Don't give up on your burner or USB ports yet. First, see if they are working through the device driver:

To open Device Manager, click Start,
point to Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Hardware tab,
click Device Manager.
Right-cl the item to be checked and select Properties.

You should be told whether or not the item is working properly. You can also update the driver from here.

Theoretically, we are supposed to be able to plug and unplug USB devices with no problem. I have found it doesn't always work that way. If I do not go through the "safely remove hardware" process before disconnecting a USB, I cannot plug in another device. This may be the case with you.

You can use Acronis True Image. It is a reliable backup utility with all needed features for backup and restore. True Image has a feature called Acronis Secure Zone that makes an invisible partition on your HD so you don't need to purchase a DVD writer. Check all features on Acronis site: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
