Compound light microscopes are the usual scopes you find in high school biology classes. They are compound microscopes because you see through two lenses at the same time: the eyepiece and the objective lens. These microscopes are good for simple study of cells, tissues, and microscopic organisms.

Stereoscopes or dissecting microscopes have lower magnification than compound microscopes, but they are perfect for seeing larger specimens in detail. For instance, to study an entire insect or the ridges in your fingertip, you would use one of these microscopes.

Electron microscopes are of two types; they have far greater magnification and resolution than light microscopes. SEMs or scanning electron microscopes show the surface detail and texture of the specimen. TEMs or transmission electron microscopes show the inside structure of cells.
