Well I had moved 8 hours away and I would say the best thing to do is to think of why you are even there and if it is benefitting yourself. Also, being far away from family is tough and talking to them every night on the phone helped me. So whatever the reason is, good luck and it is all a learning experience in the end!

I once moved 8 hours away, it was a growing time. I would recommend getting unlimited long distance calling - but set a time limit to when you call them.

For instance, I called my Mom every night and only talked to her for 5 minutes each night. Unless, of course, there was a crisis. If I needed more, I might call my sister and do the same. But I always limited each call to 5 minutes. That eases the need and the continual phone interaction with one given person vs getting out and meeting new people.

On the flip side, I just met a neighbor that has lived near me for at least 6 months (take a walk sometime and stop and talk - that is what she did and I didn't even know she had moved in). Her husband was stationed here (military) and is not on an official base. She is lonely, missing her family, hates it here. We just met, so I hope to befriend her - as I was once there and was lonely.

Get those family pictures out--albums, ones in frames, CDs. Keep your phone bill paid so you don't get cut off. Use email for everyone that you can. This is your opportunity to discover your own likes and dislikes (and what activities, etc. were done because you were participating with your family).

home is where you put your bag. Embrace what you have where you are and find fun things to do and meet new people. Soon enough you'll be having a great time!
