Shrink (Below) I soooo disagree. The sheer volume of goods and services that are bought far outweighs the number of people who benefit from the increase.

Every 1 Mc'Ds worker services hundreds of people per week. The wage increase does not equate to an equalizing price increase.

Shrink (below) The prices are raising on everything WITHOUT a min wage increase in 10 years!

You can't be serious about an equalizing price increase that offsets the wage increase??? That is a red herring argument at best. Example in follow up question. Great input Shrink. thank you.

you would count on minimum wage requirements.

my 17 yr old son gets more than min. wage.

Minimum wage is for teens starting out , not adults with families, unless your a felon or just incompetent.

Pretty despicable.

I want to know why, instead of paying so many people to stay home, why in the hell don't we help out our low-wage earners? People making minimum wage are SCREWED in this country, and every single one of us shares the blame. We haven't demanded any real change from the government, so they don't really care. It *is* all about the power on both sides, after all.

We need to start supplementing the income of our low-wage earners. We certainly need to ensure that people who are sincerely making an effort to contribute to society receive decent health coverage.

Of course, if the damned drug companies would quit paying for prime-time advertisements and handing out "free" samples like candy, maybe more people could AFFORD their medication.

We certainly need to help those in need, but why can't we drug test welfare recipients? A friend of mine asked that the other day, and she's right! So many working Americans have to pass a drug test in order to earn a living, so why do we expect less from people who need help? If they can't pass the drug test, get 'em into a rehab or counseling program - don't just hand 'em money.

Unless someone is in a coma, they can do *something* productive. Paint a park bench, pick up trash, stuff envelopes....do something! At the very least, it's good for their self-esteem - gives them a purpose. Maybe it will help them get ambition, and we should certainly help the ambitious get the education they need. But just handouts? No way. Why should you and I work to pay for someone who just does not want to help themselves?

Minium wage hikes hurt the economy in the long run. When employers can't afford to pay the minium wage they are left with two choice increase the prices of the goods to compensate for the extra they need to dish out. or high illegals. Yes minium wage going up also provides more openning for illegals.
On this issue the republicans have it.
As for the guy trying to avoid paying his taxes he is only one of many. There are people on both sides of the fence who don't fork over all that's owed.

No one who works for a living should have to live in Poverty.... Why do the Employers in America only pay their employees Poverty Level Wages? Both the Government and Employers in America have kept Sixteen(16*)+ Million working Americans in Poverty since 1997=$5.15... If they want to improve the lives of people working for Poverty Level Wages then they will have to pay above Poverty Level Wages. You can enrich others at the same time you are enriching yourself,,, Pay them a fair and equitable wage... It is nothing short of immoral not to do so... An honest days pay for an honest days work is long overdue by the U.S. Government and American Employers in this Country... To not do so is to keep them in perpetual Poverty... The value you place on your Employees is the value you place on yourself... The Republican Congress gave itself Nine(9*) pay raises since 1997 totaling $35.000 Dollars and yet denied an increase in the Minimum Wage....The actual increase they are proposing amounts to 17.6cents an hour increase for waiting 12yrs for a Minimum Wage increase... Because it is on a graduated basis we will not receive the full amount until 2010... 1997=$5.15>> 2010=$7.25.... Would you work 12yrs for a 17.6cent an hour increase in your Paycheck??? 12yrs,12yrs,12yrs... "Some men see things as they are are and say"Why?" I dream of things that never were and say "Why not?"....It is disgusting and revolting to allow the U.S. Government and American Employers to keep these American Workers in perpetual Poverty.......

Chi the practical effects of a minimum wage increase are that the cost of every good and every service goes up accordingly.

It is an articifical inflate. And that's all it is.

EDIT: Chi, the facts are there on this. That minimum wage increase doesn't do anything for the workers who receive it. It penalizes the workers who have got raises coming, as well. And when the minimum wage increases, everyone raises the cost of everything. It is nothing more than a feel-good Liberal bandaid, to make the followers think they are being given something.

The money companies save in wages they use to pay advertisers to advertise their products. Don't you often think of how many beers, cans of soda, coffee, etc. etc. etc companies have to sell to pay for 30 seconds of advertising? But, they can't raise the minimum wage? It's a sick world, and they are happy "fat cats."

It is not correct to suppose that raising the minimum wage is automatically a good thing. No employer can afford to pay an employee more than he is worth; if you are worth $6, and the minimum wage is raised to $7, you get to stay home and watch Oprah re-runs.
