No. Ninja clans were highly illegal and lived in hiding. These people were hired assasins and not respected in Japanese society at large. Some fairly large ninja clans did live Koga and Iga but they did so in secret.

How western people got the image that Ninjas were worshiped in Feudal Japan is just wrong.

Its about like going to the roughest part of town and trying to hire someone to murder for you. How you view those types of people is how the Japanese viewed the Ninja.
