My daughter drinks about 38 ounces of formula a day. I recently started feeding her about a tablespoon of rice cereal mid morning along with her formula. She doesnt seem very interested in the taste of the cereal, she'd rather have the bottle. We dont want to start adding stuff to the cereal just so she eats it. She is 19 pounds and 29 inches long. She was 9 pounds 14 ounces at birth. My husband and I are concerned about her weight so we dont want to expose her to fruits because there sweet. I was told veggies are the way to go first so she'll learn to like them. I'm curious as to what the majority of people feed/fed there babies first? Considering her weight she should be ready to move to jar food but is that wise if she doesnt care for rice or oatmeal cereal? Also how much do you feed a baby that size? I usually feed her until she refuses it, spits it out or turns away. Dont you just love all of us new parents on here who dont have a clue... LOL Thanks for any suggestions!

Weight and size have nothing to do with a baby's readiness for solids. Readiness is based on the development of your baby's digestive tract, which is indicated by other signs. From what you've described in your question (lack of interest, refusal, spitting it out), it sounds like your baby is NOT ready for solids yet. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends delaying solids until at LEAST six months of age. This is a new recommendation -- they used to recommend starting at around 4-6 months of age, but in light of new scientific research regarding the development of an infant's digestive tract, the age recommendation has been changed just in the last year or two. I put a link at the bottom regarding how to tell when your baby is ready for solids to help you watch for signs. When your baby is ready, you won't have to "convice" her to take solids; she'll show an interest in them and won't spit them back out at you.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about her size. Babies need that baby fat to make it through their toddler years when they refuse to stop playing long enough to eat and when they limit their tastes to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches -- three times a day (or whatever quirk your child picks up, my daughter is doing the PBJ thing right now!). My kids were off the charts when they were exclusively breastfed, but once they started solids and especially when they started finger foods, their weight gain slowed down and they are starting to use up some of those fat reserves that they built up as infants. Unless your doctor is worried, your daughter is probably fine!

My son was born at 9 4 he was a pig he refused to eat his cereal no matter what I did he didnt like it So I started to feed him veggie baby food and he ate it just fine he was over 20 lbs when he was one but he is almost three and his weight has stayed at 38 for a long time, keep in mind that they do lose weight when they start walking too, My doctor said that you shouldn't really start worrying until about 3 And my son also will ask for veggies now because that is what I started him on and he will pick carrots over cookies.

Cereal is sooo tasteless. Try using whole milk to make the cereal..yes, I know what doctors say about milk before 1, but it works. Never ever use honey or corn syrup to sweeten. A little applesauce is ok too. She'll still eat her veggies. Feeding her until she refuses is a good way to go, that way she will know when she is full and won't tend to over-eat.

And most important of all ( I believe I have said this before) Relax and don't worry so much lol. As long as her doctor says she is healthy and thriving and gaining weight, then just enjoy your lovely baby!

Mashed pumpkin is very good you can also add a little cooked broccoli cut up and mashed...corn is always a favourite, most veggies that are not harsh in flavour are OK as long as they are soft and no big pieces that they can choke on... but to start you might have to give a little time to her get use to it.. maybe if she has some trouble eating it to start add some to her rice cereal then progress to the pure veggie, it is important for both veggies and fruit...they are both non fattening and very good for us:-)Remember some babies can be chubby and most will lose it as they become more active! Good Luck!

Question: Which should I introduce to my baby first -- vegetables or fruits?

Answer: There are no hard and fast rules about which to introduce first, and it makes no difference to your baby in terms of ease of digestion. Some experts recommend starting with fruit first, because it's sweet, like breast milk. Others say that because humans have an innate preference for sweets, it makes sense to introduce vegetables before fruits, so that your baby will be more likely to accept them.

If you do start with veggies, your best bet is mild-flavored varieties like sweet potatoes, squash, carrots, peas, and green beans. Just remember that it might take ten tries for your baby to actually accept a new food, so don't give up!

well feed her anything she will eat, cause being milk fat isnt realy good for her, like cream potatoes and gravy sweet peas,if she can get it down then she wil be just fine, unless it bothers her stomach.i used to buy beans and sweet potatoes out of the can and blend them up cause they are better then baby food and my baby would always eat them better.so anything that you can eat she can eat just blend it up.
