It was a bear to install. Was this a good choice? Plus how do you put your computer in 'safe mode'?

Personally, I haven't heard of this software. I use Norton Internet Security because it contains all three. If it works for you, however, stick with it.

To boot your computer in safe mode, make sure the computer is off. While the computer starts up, press "r" repeatedly. Ignore any beeps the computer may make.

Keep pressing (not holding down) until you enter a different screen. There will be options like boot from CD, or boot from floppy disk. Find and select Start in Safe Mode.

I have never heard of it before
Safe mode can also be obtained by repeatedly tapping F8 when the computer first comes on...
