Historically, private sector institutions are much more efficient at inventing and developing technologies than the government. In fact, government agencies have largely gone from developing technology to simply funding its development by others.
Still, the private sector would only have invented NASA technologies if there was a practical way to profit by traveling through space, which there isn't. So, the private sector was certainly capable of creating these innovations, but, with no profit motive, would not have come up with them.

Hi. Not in the 60s and 70s. But now that space has been demonstrated to have profit potential I would expect that the private sector would build on NASA's progress and exceed it's current plans.

not even close, there was no demand for the stuff nasa invented, because nobody new what they would invent. that is a reason to continue the space program.
