My husband and I just bought a house with a fireplace. I had to put in some mortar and I need to cure it. It says to start a fire to cure it. I have no kindling to get it started. I dont have lighter fluid and I will NOT use gasoline. I have tried using printer paper cause I dont have newspapers. It just keeps burning out. Running out of ideas. Anyone have an idea for me? Thanks and hugs to all!!

Edit: We had it cleaned and checked and was told it needed mortar in some places. Went to westlakes hardware store and bought some in a tube that I caulked in.

Twist the printer paper if thats all you got real tight, and some loose, the loose paper will keep your fire going ,make sure vent is open, and wood isnt smothering each other.

Aside from buying a newspaper & picking up twigs, you might keep an old New England trick in mind for future use.
Just keep an old brick under the firegrate & put some kerosene or lighter fluid on it ( when you get it) It will burn for quite a while & eliminates the need for kindling.
Shame on me, but I have put just a little gasoline on the brick.
Up to you.

Run up the street to the convenience store and get an artificial fire log. By the way that mortar cures when you have a fire, but it won't hurt it to sit for a while before that happens. Just let it rest undisturbed.

When you used the printer paper did you wad it up into balls and use several of them at a time? I have a gas starter in the fireplace so I just light that and don't have to worry about it.
What about magazines? Again tear each page out and wad it up into a ball. Good luck

In the winter I buy a case of dura logs & a bundle of wood. I use one dura log & pile on 1-2 pieces of wood. It lasts all night & works great to get & keep the wood burning.

Have your husband split the logs into thinner pieces. Then set a can of Sterno under the logs.
