you should be able to fix it yourself. $10 to $15 it either turns off or there is a medium sized allen set screw on the underside of the spout.
before you do anything, try holding your hand over the outlet of the spout [you may get a little wet] and see if water runs up to the shower head. if so, the spout needs fix'en.
you should find how to's here: http://www.terrylove.com/forums/search.php?searchid=463799
I wouldn't call that "plumber" again, he was taking advantage of you. Most he should charge is about $100 parts and labor for about ten minutes of work....

Tell that plumber to take a hike! He was definitely trying to take advantage of you, unless he was talking about replacing the whole faucet. That would be about right for a complete change out, with parts and labor. As far as you changing the diverter spout, it is a simple job. Remove the old spout, and take it with you, so you can match it exactly. Use some Teflon tape, and pipe joint compound, on the threads of the pipe, coming out of the wall. After installation, apply some caulk around the base of the spout at the wall, to keep water from penetrating the wall. Good luck!

does water come out of the pipes when the shower head itself isnt on? take it off and check.. i think your plumber should have done that before you replaced the shower head.
so when you switch to shower mode does water just keep coming out of the bottom part? if so then yes you probably need a new one.. if not then there is a clog in the pipes somewhere..
at least thats my thoughts on it..
good luck

Yes you can. The $320 includes the labor charges. I think you can simply replace it by yourself.
