i just checked my modem speed on the 2wire page. the first time i checked it, it said i was at 734.05 kbps. then i checked it again and it went down to 720 kbps..i checked it once last time and it said 712.50 kbps. i don't understand any of this, but what i do see is my computer is super slow. now i don't know if this is a computer problem [needing more memory] or if it's because i have a bad connection.

if anyone could explain why it goes down and what it is i can do to fix it, it would be very appreciated. thanks.

Bandwidth increases and decreases with the amount of users online.
It is quite common to go up and down quite significantly.

That isn't too much of a difference to worry about. It could be due to network traffic between you and where you are getting the network speed results from.

I'm assuming you have the most basic DSL package from the phone company. If that's the case, then the results you are getting are pretty good and are within the range for what you should be getting.

However, if you are paying for a better package, where you should be getting better speeds then you need to find out why you're having a problem. The phone company generally tests the line to the box on the outside of your house. After that it becomes your responsibility. Although, they are always more than happy to charge you for an in-home visit to either check your jacks or install a new one.

I was a telecom admin for quite a few years, so I ran my own jacks. I'm also network savy, so I knew more than the techs they would send out to my house, because I had setup my network with a server and their techs had no idea what to make of them.

Anyway, I hope this helps answer your question.

thats all within regular variation for a modem i wouldnt worry about the speed. what your problem is depends on the following: does anything go slowly besides internet related things? no matter how good your computer is a slow connection will make your internet work badly and that is a common mistake ( people spend s lots of money buying computers thniking they are slow , when they just need a better connection. ) as is 700 kpbs is very slow for a high speed connection and if your computer was always this slow THATS your problem. if not it is most likly spam and spyware. go to www.download.com and download avg free and spyware se personal , both are free nontrial services and work almost as well as the expensive norton and mcaffee equals.

Real live modem speed is dependant on so many factors especially Internet is involved and always less than whatever their advertised speed, you should take in the value at face value and no question is askable about this..

Computer being slow is completely separate stuff.
