Stay away from synthetic fibers. Look for a cotton sock instead. They'll be more comfortable and will wick moisture away from your feet, avoiding rubbing (and blisters, thusly). Some socks have a handy little feature with a reinforced ankle, where there is a little bit of extra thickness where many people experience rubbing on the backs of their ankles.
If in doubt, try asking someone at your local sporting goods store or a running shop.
Happy walking!

Properly fitting shoes and socks are the key. And even a properly fitting shoe has to be worn in. As for socks, the US military uses wool socks... but it didn't keep me from getting blisters.
What did was putting a pair of Dr. Shoals Sport insoles in my shoes.
Even though the blisters you are getting are probably on your toes, having proper arch support will prevent your foot from sliding around in your shoe or boot and keep you from getting so many blisters.
As for the socks, unless you are wearing socks that don't fit properly (the seams don't line up with your heel, the only thing I can think of that would really cause blisters there is if you are using socks with big seems in the toe. If this is the case, you can wear your socks inside out.
PS. Just read about the mole skin guys suggestion. Mole skin is for treating blisters, not preventing them. The proper way to use moleskin is cut a hole in it the size of your blister and stick it over the blister to keep it from rubbing as much. Don't stick it OVER the blister, that will just make it worse.

Get the white, cotton socks with the thick sole for walking or sports. You can get them almost anywhere. Haines makes them, Nike makes them to name a couple. They usually come in bundles of 3 to 6 pairs. The have the ones that just reach the top of the low cut tennis shoe, the ones which come about two inches above the shoe and the ones like a regular sock which come up about 6 inches above the shoe.

Too late to buy something now, you need to break in hiking boots before wearing for long hikes. Should buy a pair of boots now to start breaking in for NEXT year. Blisters are caused by footwear that doesn't fit correctly and moisture causes other problems. Buy some Gore-Tex socks to wear over hiking socks to keep feet dry

Consider a new pair of comfortable walking shoes and wear longer quality socks (not athletic socks either, as they are low and very easy to blister your skin)

Wool socks if your not alergic and adverse to the heat. a terry cotton is also good. Take moleskins to put on if you get a blister, they are easy to carry a few in the pocket, sticky back kind, some sanitary wipe napkins to clean the blister if you get any. Good luck hiking, its a fun and great sport, I love it.

Wear two pairs of socks - a thin pair first then another pair over them. When you walk the socks will rub and not your feet.
I do a lot of long distance walking /running and this is the method I use.

Thick cotton socks should be fine. Cotton gives you breathability, while the extra thickness will protect against blisters.
