He made a name for himself in the UK as a record producer, manager etc and signed a number of bands to his record label including Westlife - one of the most successful UK acts.
He sold his stake in the record company for something like 40 million then earned his reputation for being obnoxious by being a judge on the UK version of American Idol - called Pop Idol. Pop Idol was very successful and American Idol is a spin off from it.

He was a successful record producer in the UK,signing up, amongst others, Westlife. He was involved in setting up 'Pop Idol' in the UK from which 'American Idol' was born. In fact, it would be fair to say if not for Simon Cowell 'American Idol' may not have happened.
I am not a great fan of shows like American Idol but watch it occasionally (when there's nothing else on the box) and certainly don't know music well enough to critique any performer but it seems to me that the judge the contestants should listen to the most is Cowell who, under his dry, acerbic British sense of humor (which I do appreciate tho' I can understand Americans failing to) his comments and suggestions are the most useful for any contestant wishing to improve themselves. He is the judge who most regularly provides constructive criticism as opposed to the other two who seem to pander to the audience more.

Simon Cowell is a famous British record producer which he recorded music for different artists in the mid- late 1980s before his business (Fanfare Records) went bankrupted in 1989. That is when he began record music for independent works in the United Kingdom for Sony BMG (British version of Sony Co.)

He is obnoxious, but he knows what he's talking about. He is a producers, producers have to know when they hear something good, that is their job. And i can tell you he has a lot more credibility in his opinion that Paula Abdul.

He isn't. They needed a snarky, haughty, brutally honest host for the show, he auditioned, and he got the part.
Before that he was just another music producer.
Did you know he helped produce Eddie Murphy's abysmal album back in the '80s?
