ikea has affordable stuff however; the quality of some items are poor.
mor furniture often has good deals on furniture. i got an ultrasuede sofa, love seat, and area rug for under $1000!
west elm in mission valley and plummers have some nice, modern pieces but can be pricey.
check out the miramar area - there are tons of furniture stores there.
