depends what games you are playing. I am n Nvidia gforce person my friend is an ATI Radeon person.
SOme games are designed to perform better on Nvidia while some on ATI, although most go for Nvidia.
I got an Nvidia GeForce 6600GT 128MB and it does the job..perfectly.. for mosrt games. i want to get a 512MB GT though... you can never go wrong with an 8800 :D

Nvidia covers a more general video range, acceptable to most games and gamers. They have great products, but ATI also has good stuff too. ATI, while advanced, has problems with some games that Nvidia works awesome with. Basically, a matter of choice and preference. If you have a certain brand already in your computer, it's usually best to upgrade with the same to avoid video conflicts.
Hope this helps!

Well as of now for directx 10 gaming, it would have to be nvidia since ati hasn't even had their directx 10 cards in stores. Ati video cards are better at rendering games that shadows and lots of lighting, while nvidia games are better at rendering games with the opengl interface. For the highest-end video card, the Nvidia XFX 7900 GTX is definitely the best in overall performance. If you want a good middle range card around 200 bucks, I would definitely go with Ati's X1950 pro. hope this helped!

I really like NVIDIA for gaming but ATI has some nice models. I would go to www.tomshardware.com and compare a couple of video cards to see which one you like.
