If you remove the cap, and the rotor from your distributor, you will probably see a star shaped rotor and a pickup with an equal number of points.
The number of points on the star equals the number of cylinders, 4,6,or 8, that your engine has. The pickup coil can be replaced for a low price at an auto parts store. The distributor has to be removed to do this, and must be replaced with the cap pointed the same direction when done or the engine will not start.

It's the part of the distributor used to keep track of RPM and it signals the coil to fire or signals an ignition box that applies any necessary retard (delay) to the spark and then fires the ignition coil.
