Well turtles can go a few days without eating and survive. You should plan for these eventualities though because having a reptile is for responsible people, and to be responsible you aren't allowed to say "I just ran out of food for my animal". You also need to be feeding fresh unprocessed foods anyway regardless of what species it is, because store bought turtle food is mostly junk.

Now for your ? It depends on the species. If you have a box turtle you can ( and should ) be using collard, turnip, or mustard greens, carrot, carrion root, squash, etc. They also like snails, earthworms, crickets, grasshoppers, and some beetles.
Go to http://www.boxturtlesite.info for menu items

If it is a water turtle they may eat some of the above veggies or fruits, but will probably prefer worms, feeder fish, crickets, grasshoppers, etc.
You can search for that on austinsturtlepage.com too.

What Do Turtles Eat

2016-09-25 22:49:46 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

First, not all turtles eat the same things, just like some humans are vegetarian and others arent.

Shrimp is the main diet of some species. Shrimp is also a main contributer to one version of shell disease.

Turtles are pretty efficient in using their food- they really don't need very much, so its OK to let them go a bit hungry once in a while- like when trying to force them to change foods.

The 'nutritious pellets' may taste horrible to the turtle (they DO have taste buds) and may not be as healthy as you think, especially after the tradgedy with the harmful catfood and dogfood, I dont know if id trust any type of petfood. It may be worthwhile to do a bit of reseach on them before you start to depend on them alone.

In general, live or fresh food is healthier and variety is important. Try offering a few pellets along with appropriate live/fresh food and see what kinds of results you get.

It would be more helpful to know the species of your turtle to give you more information. :)

What kind of turtle, and how old?

There are few 'household' foods we can feed a young pond turtle, like a Red-ear Slider- however, we can dig up worms, which are great. Crickets and some other bugs are good as well.

For a good list of foods by species, try http://www.austinsturtlepage.com

(FYI- young pond turtles, like Red-ears, DO NOT eat veggies, and NO aquatic turtle eats fruit! I am amazed at how many people are feeding their poor pets inappropriately!)

It all depends on that kind of turtle it is. most turtles you buy at the pet store eat turtle food; however, they will eat gold fish as well. Its good to give them a little bit of both.

Really depends on the turtle, but the majority of other things besides the little pellets are lettuce, grapes, peaches, carrots, bananas .. You may feed him/her grapes for treats and such, or just a small plateful of the mix. They also have spring mixes for turtles that you can find at PetsMart for an inexpensive price that your turtle will like.

If your turtle is a red ear slider, I'm sure it can survive for a day or two without food. Just make sure, you buy it as soon as possible. You can feed them cat food, if you have any. Or even lettuces.
