Ok, so this happened to me last year. I had unprotected sex and then went to the hospital to ask where I could get emergency contraceptives because it was the weekend and the health department was closed. They told me the only thing I could do was drive up to this other hospital that was 30 minutes away and wait in the emergency room.

But, I have been reading online that as of 1999, anyone over 18 does not need a prescription to get the morning after pill, they need only to walk into the pharmacy and get it over the counter.

So am I right that really all you have to do is walk into the pharmacy, you don't have to go to all that other trouble? Or is there something I have confused here?

It varies by state.
I would call a pharmacy and ask them what the protocol is.

In the state of South Carolina the morning after pills are in pharmacys. You have to ask for them because they're behind the counter.

The FDA approved the OTC sale of Plan B this past summer, and the drug has been available since November at pharmacies.
