At the beginning of the season lots of teams put a rest day after opening day not because the team needs the rest, but to have a day for a home opener rain-out. Teams don't want to lose money with a rain out and they also don't want to have to squeeze in a double header early in the season.

Because most outdoor ballparks w/o a retractable roof or dome need to have an open day after the scheduled opener in case of a rainout.

If Opening Day gets rained out, it automatically gets pushed back by one day. Many fans buy opening day (and some teams charge more for opening day than for other games) tickets specifically, and wouldn't want to end up with a raincheck for the second or third game of the season instead.

It is strictly a league decision based on potential weather problems. They want to make sure that they have every opportunity to get in the opener before each team heads out on their first road trip. It allows every team to get their home opener in during the first week of the season.

I'm from Cleveland, so I can answer this one. !!
They usually don't schedule a game for the next day in case of a rainout, or, in Cleveland's case, a SNOW out !!

Unfortunately, our opening day is Friday, and they forecast is for SNOW. There is a game scheduled for the next day...big mistake !!!
