Actually, most of the responses miss the essence of truth.
The fact is that many of the individual states DID have recognized churches. The purpose of the Establishment Clause was not to keep government and religion separate, it was to keep the federal government from interfering with the states that wanted official religions.
The document in which the idea of separation of church and state is found is a letter from Thomas Jefferson, who wasn't personally at the Constitutional Convention.

Nore is it mentioned anywere in any documents. The First Amedment; Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise there of, or adridging the freedom of speach,or of the press, or the right of the people peacably to assemble, asnd to petition the goverment for a redress of grivances.
Our hole government is a mess and contradicting. In court they can have you put your hand on a bible and swear to tell the truth, the hole truth so help you god. But children can no longer pray in school or say the pledge of allegiance to the flag. There is an old saying, it's gonna get worse before it gets better. If it does we will never live to see it.

Just kidding.
No I do think it's very important to maintain a balance of government and religion though.
Hopefully they can compliment each other.
