I usually pig out on cookie dough or something, lol. Then I play with my dogs and try and keep in mind that things will improve because they always do. I did get some helpful advice from someone who told me that whenever I'm feeling low, go help out someone less fortunate than me.

This can be a major process at first. However with the right info one can learn to get in control. In my case, and I admit I went through really tough times down there at the bottom, I hit paydirt. Was it worth the search? You better believe it. I am happier and healthier than ever. I now have it down to three small words. All is well. As soon as I feel like my mood is dipping a little, " All is well ".
Sometimes in the beginning, the negative state is so low on the scale that a quantum leap to well-being is too much of a jump. In that case the trick is to move to the thought or emotion that though it is negative it feels somewhat better. Then one moves a little higher on the scale and so on until one reaches the most positive ones. One very useful book to help oneself with these transformational tools is

My mother's taught me that we never make bad / wrong decisions in life, that we can't ever dwell on what didn't go our way; to always look ahead, never back and that everything that we go through are just experiences in life that help us grow into stronger and better individuals. Always look for the positive in everything and learn from every experience.

On a more personal level, I try to believe that people are really good at heart and that whatever they've done to offend me is really an expression of their own pain and experience and not necessarily directed at me.

Revenge is in the end more harmful to ourselves than to our offender. When someone hurts me, I thank them for making me feel alive. They expect you to try to take revenge, but if you do exactly the opposite, it will make you feel better as a person and perhaps help them analyze their own actions and realize the harm that they have caused.

On a spiritual level I remember that "where ever God closes a door, somewhere he always opens a window."

I in-vision a better future. I tell myself that this too shall change, so don't live in the moment of the bad experience, look forward to the end. And I also believe whats goes around, comes around, so I never hold a grudge against anyone, that is only hurting me. When someone does something to you, you will learn what kind of person he or she really is, then you can know if you want to keep them in your life.

A few years ago, my mom was very ill and the doctors weren't very hopeful. I was in the hospital gift shop while she was having some tests done, while there I found a card, it's just simple, but it means the world to me when I feel hopeless. It says "Believe in your heart that everything will be alright." I keep that card in my Bible and when I'm feeling hopeless or overwhelmed, I take it out and read it and it always makes me feel better.

When times are tough, I take a deep breath, cry myself out and formulate a plan. Trying to find a way out always gives me hope. Keeping my mind busy is all I need to keep walking through the mist. Then, my body follows.

When things are tough as you say, what keeps me going is my Husband and Family, I have seven kids all adults, with kids of their own, 15 grand kids whom I adore with all my heart and I still have room in my Heart for my great granddaughter to cherish. The faith in God is what inspires me to go on. Maybe this is not what you wanted the answer to be, but it is what I feel.

I don't use or think of hope.... if someone "hopes" they're wishing for something to happen or be a certain way, typically something which will benefit THEM or something/someone which will indirectly. Much better and easier to actually do something to work towards &/or make something happen or be a certain way.

I just remember that somebody else, somewhere in this world, has it worse than me. I think of all the suffering children and families in the 3rd world, all the abused women there-being raped, having no rights, no voice, genital mutilation just so they cannot feel pleasure, starving children, etc. etc. and i know that i really do have it pretty good! I'll take my lumps with a grin.
