Nitrogen is an extremely inert gas due to the very high strength of the bond between its atoms. It will not normally burn, and needs an extremely high temperature (eg in a car engine) to get it to combine with oxygen. This gives rise to nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gases of petrol-driven cars.
