Which I guess is really beautiful, and there is a lot to do, but I just have this image of England being cold and gray,

That's because everyone has England stereotyped - pictures of cold grey buildings of London in the drizzle. The idea that all English people lead boring lifestyles, sittting around drinking cups of tea and eating cream teas, and saying "How do you do"! That's the "image" of England that's a throw-back from its colonial days - I know this as I grew up in Singapore, which only stopped being an English colony in 1965.

It's so untrue! I thought the same until I came here in 1989, and now I've travelled all over the UK, and consider it to be one of the most scenic and beautiful countries in the world - English people also don't blow their trumpets enough! The English Tourism Board needs to publicise how diverse and interesting a country England is - from the quaint, lovely and unique South West and the picture-postcard prettiness of the Cotswolds, to the rugged beauty of the Pennines and the lovely countryside around the Lakes and Northumberland.

You could be surfing in the South West one week, and climbing mountains in the Pennines the next. Also English people are some of the most intelligent and witty and interesting people I've met, and I have travelled all over the world, so I am quite impartial.

Hi.
I assume you are an American as it is now 3 AM GMT and most good Brits are sound asleep.
I live in Kent in the south east, it is called the garden of England as there is so many orchards, veggie gardens and hop farms here. Do come and visit, I live in Royal Tunbridge Wells, a lovely town which has just celebrated its 400th centenary. It is rather a pretty place, full of Regency, Georgian and early Victorian buildings and has a lot of green park spaces here for us to walk in. It is a very good shopping centre, quite a few of the shops would not be out of place in Rodeo Drive or Brompton Road, Kensington. It is a bit posh but is mostly friendly. It is built on a hilly area and is certainly not grey at all. Come to the Trinity Theatre, we have some very good films, music and plays, down the road from there is the Forum which is definitely on the music map with The Kooks, Killers and Mogwai playing there recently. Come to the UK, it is A1!

LOOL I live in London and we like Americans, well most of us :) I do! :D we don't think you sound stupid I think its sometimes you confuse us like we have different sayings e.g sidewalk and pavement so if you maybe 'convert' to British 'sayings' while you here than maybe people would think you sound 'stupid' so say pavement instead if sidewalk, may seem funny at first but you'll get used to it I guess I mean I would find it weird going to america and saying sidewalk, the only time I say sidewalk is when singing Kelly clarkson 'because of you' LOL-- well that's just London and places around like Essex and Kent but if your talking like Manchester or something than I wouldn't know how to help so yeah have fun while your here :) where about in England you going? Oh and yes we call it a holiday haha :p Hope I helped :D

Yes, it sounds extremely stupid. For a start we have a much better climate these days than we used to have. Our summers are often very hot.

Try looking for photos of the great city of London- rumoured to be the world's favourite city now - or counties such as Devon, Cornwall or North Yorkshire. There is also the Lake District.

Maybe parts of England were grey during the Industrial Revolution but not now.

OhMyGosh. How rude, lol. England isn't that bad!

It's not boring at all. We're not a bunch of old farts with top hats anymore... But it IS grey a lot of the time. There's still plenty of gorgeous countryside to see though!

Summertime is still great here but places like Australia and America have guaranteed sunshine pretty much all of the time (grr). We appreciate it more though :oP

Btw Nottingham (where I'm from) isn't as bad as the media makes out... Y'know, with them calling it Shottingham etc.

I just wanted to point that out.

Everyone has different perceptions of things. Me, I perceive it as being sophisticated and charming. But you could probably get the impression of it being cold and gray from watching A Christmas Carol, or from reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Trust me, you do NOT want to read that book. It's morbid.

Look up the New Forest and the Eye in London on the Thames. It's so beautiful in England. Everyone calls you "luv" and you never have to drink alone, what could be better than that?

Its really sunny today and lovely. Depends where you go. Most of the cities have a lot of culture to them and old buildings and cathederals. Its only a bit grey during mid october to about march when the rain slows a bit. The summers have got warmer and more dry in the last couple of years.

The countryside and places like the highlands, peak district and lake district are lovely and green and pretty.

To be honest, the bits that aren't green are pretty grey. However, there's no end of excitement - we don't bother employing many police officers and the prisons are all full, anyway, so every chav, scrote and freeloader knows there's a good chance they'll get away with doing exactly what they want. Don't leave anything unattended - even if you've bolted it to the foor (they'll just rip the floor up) and if anybody with rather fewer teeth than they probably ought to have asks for your money or mobile phone, it's best to give it to them and then run away - unless you like being stabbed and having your head jumped on.

At night, you can see some classic street fighting, glass bottle hurling contests, live sex shows in car parks and local artists using their bodily fluids to decorate the pavements. If you're really lucky you might get involved in a bit of audience participation - which usually means getting thrown through the kebab shop window.

If that's not enough excitement for you, you can play "Guess whether your car has been clamped, stolen or burned while you were away...

only about 1/4 of the time is it cold and grey
what with global warming we are getting extremely mild winters, early springs, hot summers, only the other day we had hail and brilliant sunshine all in the same day.
Yesterday it was warm enough to go to the beach, today it's gone colder again.
BUT if you like the coast, you should visit, you are never more than 75 miles from the sea .
Plenty of cultural stuff to do and attractions to visit.
For good weather visit May to September.

M : )
