Depends who it is really. If it my best friend then whatever really. If I am having friends over that I have cooked for before I will something impressive to show off my cooking skills a little bit!
My top dishes to cook are:
Pork fillet with a white wine and mushroom sauce with tumeric fried rice
Chicken and Bacon Risotto
Lasagne (with home made pasta) with home made garlic bread and a green salad
Roast dinner with all the trimmings
Chicken and Lentil Casserole with herb dumplings
Chicken, Coconut and Pineapple Curry with saffron rice, home made naan bread and popodoms.
Those are the dishes that taste the best and I cook the best.
For desserts I generally make one of the following:
Cheesecake
Chocolate and Strawberry cake
Rice pudding
Carrot cake with cream cheese icing
Or, if I am being a bit lazy, layered Instant whip pudding using chocolate, banana and strawberry instant whip and layering it into sundae glases and topping with whipped cream and sprinkles.

It would depend on who is coming over. There's a lot to consider when you're having people come to your house and share a meal with you, and you really want them there, I mean. I'd want to make something that everyone would like, and hopefully something that might be new to one or more of my guests would be something they would like try sample and enjoy. I guess I get a tad nervous when it comes to a situation such as this, because this is one of those times where it matters what other people think. Not that I think that they would stop liking me, but I wouldn't want them to not want to come to my house any more or eat anything I've cooked. So, when you come over, I'll put on a chicken!

I made a meal for my friends . It was goulash. It may not sound good since it begins with goo, but it is lovely. I also made hot potato salad.
For desert I made chocolate torte with ice cream and some
passion fruit. They enjoyed it and so did I. I got the recipies from Anthony Warrel Thomas's cook book.

Something I could fix ahead of time so that I can visit with a minimum of preparation while they are there. Something that most people like ( although you could ask if they have any dietary restrictions but that usually makes it harder for one)
Baked chicken that you can keep warm in the oven, scalloped potatoes, steamed vegetables with salad and rolls OR Spaghetti is always good with salad and french bread.

When I have friends over to eat I usually make so much food I could actually feed the entire neighborhood. I make several main dishes, salads, desserts. I usually have a cheese and crackers plate, a fruit plate, cookie plate, several appetizers and more.
