The number of players that could go straight from high school to pro football and manage to 1.) succeed and 2.) avoid crippling injury is close to 0. An 18 year old would litterally get killed trying to play in the NFL.

I don't thin k it matters...Even if they were I don't think they'd be drafted. Kids out of high school have not matured physically enough to take the beating that they would get in the NFL. College not only allows the players to play at a higher level but gives the kids a chance to develop physically as well. But to answer the question no they shouldn't be eligible they are clearly not ready. There are few true freshman that are ready to start in big time college conferences and probably 0 that are ready to play in the NFL. And NFL roster spots are way too valuable to waste on a developmental project. Teams need guys that are ready to step in and play at any moment.

While most people on here tend to believe that an 18 year old is not developed enough, there actually IS a player entering the draft this year at 18 years old. He GRADUATED college at such a young age because he is extremely smart. The reason they want collegiate experience is because college football is more closely related to NFL football than HS football. Another good reason for this is the NFL has seen many players take one good licking and their career is done. Atleast with some college background, it should not be as hard to obtain another career after the glory of football is gone.

Physically a kid right out of high school could not make it in the NFL. Not to mention the mental and social aspects. Personally I think all pro sports would be better off if they banned or refused to draft anyone not 4 years removed from high school, Might help some of those college graduation rates, especially for college basketball players.

actually you are wrong. The NBA makes players wait AT LEAST 1 year before coming in. Yes some other sports let players in earlier but those sports arent as physical. Although most are not big enough, there are a few, and those few are not mentally ready to be thrown out into a world of agents, and deciding contracts and professional football. The NFL knows this and to make sure that the kids arent stuck in a situation that they cant get out of, they just made a rule that kids cant come in straight from high school

High School players just aren't big enough, quick enough, or smart enough to play in the NFL. Those three to four years are very important in the mental and physical development of a pro football player. Not only would a player straight out of high school be more likely to be injured but the are more likely to make costly mistakes on and off the field.

They are not ready. Their bodies are not ready. They are not ready mentally. They would go from a simple system to so complex that it would make them go insane. And the big one, because it is a contact sport. Even if you were a monster coming out of high school, say you bench 365 and squat 500. I'm pretty sure that there are punters in the league that can do that. Most guys would rep that weight. I think the NFL would get sued is why they don't do it, too many injuries would happen.

A player has to be 3 years removed from high school to be eligible for the NFL draft. The main reason for this is because a body actually needs time to mature to compete, unlike baseball and basketball where there is not as much contact.Another reason is to encourage a player to stay in school longer.

I think basically the main points are, there just to young....an 18 year old kid would get killed in the NFL. And what happens if he gets injured?(wich will probably most likely happen at that age) then where, does he go from there? he has no college degree or anything. Also College, is a big part of training, and prepearing for the NFL.
