A private employer can do just about anything they want. If an employee doesn't like it then they can move on to another job.
It's called freedom.
Of course, the government will step in if an employer discriminates based on sex, religion, race, etc. Of course, this is only if it is blatant discrimination. Discrimination happens all the time but it is often hard to prosecute nor in many cases should it be. After all, a company should be able to associate itself with the people it wants. The Constitution does not guarantee anyone a job.

You shouldn't feel bad.
Employers have a right to determine what they believe an employee is worth. If employees don't like what they're being paid, they have the right to leave and work elsewhere.
If your pay rate was increased and your friends' decreased, that means your value to the employer went up while your friends' went down. Its merely a coincidence and you should not try to read anything else into it.

Yes, an employer has the right to pay you whatever he wants as long as it meets the minnimum wage.
If you have a contract and don't violate it the pay can't be decresed....but in a job with no contract pay can be reduced for any reason except discrimination.

Any and all United States employers can decrease your rate of pay, although most will not for fear of strikes and loosing their workers.

Yes they can! This can be done for any number of reasons: change in job description, not meeting goals (in otherwords, not paying out bonuses), restructuring, changing job title, etc. In many cases it is perfectly legal!
