The simplest difference between guitar and bass guitar is the pitch range of the instruments. Bass guitar plays notes an octave lower than a regular guitar. Think of the song ‘Another One Bites the Dust’ by Queen. The first few notes you hear are the sound of the bass guitar. In fact, that is the sound of the lowest note on the most common type of bass guitar.

Guitar, with its higher range, also plays a supportive role and solos are more common on guitar. Traditionally guitar is a bit more out front and in the spotlight. But, the bass is very critical in a band. You will see many bands without guitarists and without drummers, but not many without a bass player. That should tell you the importance of the bass guitar in a band. Furthermore, the bass still has all the same possibilities as the guitar. You can solo and play many things like a guitarist does. It’s just not the traditional role the bass plays and what people often want from a bass player

The guitar has 6 or 12 strings, and the bass has only 4. When you play guitar you are playing melody or chords, while on bass you are giving a deeper tone to the song. You don't play the melody, but most of the time you repeat notes over and over. Sometimes there is a bass solo and some songs have the bass playing some melody, but most of the time, you are just playing the same notes over and over.

These people are all ridiculous. The bass and guitar are VERY similar. They have the same first four strings. E A D G, but the guitar then has two more. The strings are going to give you a lower octave then the guitar though (thus the name bass). You pick the bass, rather than strum it like you do the guitar. The bass is bigger and the strings much thicker and heavier. Good luck!

Ignore the rude people calling you names!

No, the bass guitar and 'the guitar' are very different. If you play 'the guitar' you either play rhythm (where you just play chords and it keeps the rhythm of the song going, sometimes on an acoustic guitar, sometimes electric) or 'lead guitar', which is for solos and is usually an electric guitar.

The bass guitar simply plays the very low notes one at a time (no chords). Normal guitars have 6 strings and bass guitars have 4. Sometimes bass guitars get to do a solo too as it can sound really funky. Like the theme of Seinfeld!

Bass player here.

You only play one note at a time on the bass (the vast majority of the time), whereas you generally play chords on guitar (unless it's lead guitar).

You pluck the string on the bass. You pick or strum the guitar.

The bass has fewer strings than a guitar (in general).

This one might be the most important one: The bass is a rythmn instrument more like the drums, than the lead guitar. The bassist and the drummer need to be "together" more than the rest of the band.

Your not a loser for not knowing.
Most ppl dont actually know.
The bass has 4 strings and a guitar has 6.
The neck on a bass is longer..
You play it differently. Most ppl strum the guitar strings with a pick, but on a base you use 2 fingers holding them up and down...
And the bass is a low noise.

The bass guitar usually has four strings (or more depending on how many you want) is more limited with the things you can play and the techniques you can learn. It produces a lower sound and is also seen as the easier instrument of the two.

Personally, I find playing they guitar a lot more enjoyable and more of a challenge. Plus, your reputation is better than that of a bassists ;]

No, but if you want to learn both start with the guitar and then learning the bass will be easier to learn. So, they're somewhat similar. Definitely not the same, though.
