Almost all living things need carbon to grow, it is part of the cellular respiration as opposed to lung respiration. Carbon is combined with many other elements to produce many of the tissues in our body. It is a carrier for oxygen through the membrains of the body and facilitates the release of energy in cellular respiration.It is the energy source which drive our body. Carbon monoxide is deadly to human being as it block the uptaks of oxygen by the red blood cell which carry it around the body and we suffocate.

It makes up everything that is living (as far as we know anyway) so I guess, without carbon, we wouldn't be here.
