There are two cases, both of which are tricks.

1. If gold was weighed in pounds, it would be by a Troy pound of 5760 grains, while the feathers would be weighed by an avoirdupois pound of 7000 grains. However, gold is no longer weighed in Troy pounds. Even huge quantities of it are measured in Troy ounces of 480 grains, or one-twelfth of an old Troy pound.

2. A pound mass of gold will weigh the same as a pound mass of feathers if weighed IN A VACUUM. When they are in air, both masses are buoyed up by the weight of the air that they displace, which in the case of the gold is about one-thousandth of an ounce. The feathers are bulkier, so they are buoyed up by rather more, and appear to weigh less.

If the line: "Not a trick question. You would know if you sold gold!" is supposed to be a hint then:

A pound of gold is lighter.

1 pound of feathers = 453.59g

But for precious metals like gold...the troy weight system is often used.

1 troy pound = 373.24g

A pound of feathers weighs MORE than a pound of gold, because gold is measured in TROY weight (12 ounces = 1 pound), while feathers and other non-precious metals are measured in AVOIRDUPOIS weight (16 ounces = 1 pound).

A pound is a pound, is a pound. A pound of feathers weights the same as a pound of gold. But a pound of feathers can be complressed to occupy less space than a pound of gold. This is called density.

This article is about the weight unit. For the force unit, see Pound-force. For all other uses, see Pound.
The pound (abbreviations: lb or, sometimes in the United States, #) is a unit of weight in a number of different systems, including various systems of units of weight that formed part of English units, Imperial units, and United States customary units. Its size can vary from system to system. The most commonly used pound today is the international avoirdupois pound.

The distinction between mass and weight (or force), and its development, is discussed in the article on weight. In some circumstances, the pound is used as the name of a unit of force. That usage is discussed in the article on pound-force (a unit of force based on a weight of one (avoirdupois) pound and the acceleration of gravity at the surface of the Earth).

A pound of feathers. Gold is weighed in troy weight and there is only 14 ounces to the troy pound. 16 to avoid dupois pound.
So watch out you gold diggers, your getting short changed.

a pound of gold is the same weight as a pound of feathers..
you would have a lot more feathers in a bag than you would have gold coins in a bag, nonetheless, they are the same exact weight....

But if I remember correctly, isnt gold weighed in Karats???
