All I can say is that a lot of people put boards under the mattress because of back pain, and stone slab beds are becoming more popular. So if it feels good, do it. A sagging mattress is more likely to give you back pain.

Yes, it can. The human spine in curvy, not flat (like the floor). A mattress absorbs some of the weight where it curves downwards, while providing support to the places where it curves up, thus preventing muscles and joint soreness. A floor can't offer that.
I don't know of any hard data that proves that long-run use can cause permanent damage, as any scientific testing could've been deemed unethical. However, back injuries are known to be caused by joint compaction (some runners and track & field athletes get these, as do truck drivers, from jumping out of their cab instead of climbing down) over a long period of time. While sleeping without proper support is not, technically, compaction, it does prevent the joints in the spine from sitting in optimal alignment, which is one problem long-term compaction could cause.
Finally, you're not likely to experience as comfortable a rest as somebody on a matress. The short and long-term effects of sleep deprivation vary from person-to-person, but it's never a nice situation. It makes sense when you think about it: you can go weeks without food and days without water, but how often are you biologically-compelled to fall asleep?

When my son was younger and frequently woke at night I would sleep on the floor next to his crib. Actually my back felt better sleeping on the floor (it was carpeted) than in a bed.

It can cause your back to hurt. I don't think that there would be and long term problem but why not get a mattress or cot? Even bums sleep on something.

As long as you don't sleep with the side of your body to the floor, nothing. Many people do it to correct their posture.
