Okay I'm currently doing my homework and I'm sorta stuck on a problem -

Only 12% of an iceberg's mass is above water. If the mass above water is 9,000,000 kg, what is the mass of the entire iceberg?

Possible Answers:

F. 108,000 kg
G. 1,080,00 kg
H. 75,000,000 kg
J. 120,000,000 kg

I'm not trying to cheat, but I really need help. I dont need to know the answer coming from you guys, but if you know how to do it can you tell me how to solve it?

The answer is H. You can find it without even doing any calculations. Since the iceberg has to be greater than 9,000,000 it rules out F and G. You know the visible part is more than 10% of the iceberg itself, and 10% of 75,000,000 kg is 7,500,000 and 10% of 120,000,000 kg is 12,000,000. This rules out J because 9,000,000 is not greater than 12,000,000.

To actually calculate it, you would simply divide 9,000,000 by 12% (which is the same as .12). Just be careful with all those zeroes, and the decimal places. It would be easy to make a small error there and get the whole thing wrong.

okay well here's how you solve the problem. there can only be 100% of something and 12% is above the water. So the fraction of the iceberg above the water is 12/100. Well you know the mass of the iceberg that is above the water is 9,000,000kg but you don't know how much the entire iceburg weighs so say it's a variable like x. Therefore the fraction of the mass of the iceberg above the water is 9,000,000/x. Set the two fractions equal to each other 12/100=9,000,000/x. Then cross multiply and you should get the answer. In this case the answer should be 75,000,000 or H. Good luck with the rest of your homework.

Ok. Here we go:
12% = 9,000,000 kg or 12 over 9,000,000.
There is 88% left over in the 100% of the ice berg. This means that if you made an equation it would look like this: 12 = 88
900000 x
Then, cross multiply. If you don't know how to do this...Multiply 9000000 by 88 then divide by 12. You should get 66000000. Then add the 9000000 original kilograms to the total ^.
You should then come up with the answer of:
H. 75,000,000 kg

Hope you do well! Good luck!

Okay, first make a proportion. Have you learned about these? You need to know the mass of the entire iceberg so let that be x. Now, you proportion would be the following: (Remember, 12% = 12/100)
12/100 = 9,000,000/x
This is because 12% of the iceberg is 9 million so you are trying to find out what a 100% would be. Now cross multiply and you'll get something like 12x = something. Now divide both sides by 12 and you get your answer! Good luck!

The answer is not G; it is H.

You can divide 100 by 12 to find the ratio of the whole mass to the mass above the water.

The ratio would be 25/3.

Multiply this ratio by 9,000,000 to get the mass of the whole iceberg, which is 75,000,000.

um im thinking.....it's H. 75,000,000

im in 8th grade. this is what we learned. its REALLY helpdul trust me

formula is-
is %
--- = -----
of 100
step 1. you know IS is going to be 9,000,000 kg because it says ABOVE WATER "IS" 9,000,000 kg

you know percent is 12 beacause it says
and the formula says % is over 11 and you don't know what OF is.

then the formula becomes

9,000,000 12%
---------- = ----------
X 100

now cross multiply-
9,000,000 x 100= 900,000,000
12 times X is 12x cuz u dont know what X is

and you get 12x=9000,000,000

divide both sides by 12 to get x= 75,000,000

X=75,000,000 <=== thats the answer!

the steps are easy ask your mom to read this to you to help u understand if you dont and she'll help you. its easy as making steps on how to make a PBJ sandwich.

i really hope this helps

im only 14 in 8th grade. maybe you are too. i dont know

the answer is h. first you know that 12% is equal to .12 and you know that 12% of a number = 9,000,000. so do an algebra problem, .12 times n= 9,000,000 first divide by .12 to get it to the other side. so now you should have 9,000,000 divided by .12 the answer is 75,000,000

I find it best to just translate these problems from words into an equation, substituting "of" with multiplication and "is" with equals.

So what we're told here is 12% OF the entire mass IS 9,000,000 kg. So if x is the mass, then:
0.12 * x = 9,000,000

Solving this for x, you get
x = 9,000,000 / 0.12 = 75,000,000

Put the equal sign in place of the "is".
12% M = above water ; 9,000,000 = above water
Things equal to the same thing are equal to each other. so
0.12 M = 9,000,000
M = 9,000,000 / 0.12
M = 75,000,000

12 % means 12/100. Call the entire mass x.
So 12x/100 = (whatever it says with all those 0's :) ) Then, you can solve for x.

If you're wondering why I'm multiplying the two values, you are taking that fraction of the entire mass x, so "of" replaces "multiply by" basically.
