I was wondering if anyone knew the safe overclocking limits for an AMD Athlon processor.
A free overclocking program wouldn't be bad either..

Hi. I have an overclocked AMD Athlon XP 3000+. Not all chips can be unlocked. There are NO safe over clocking limits. Always a risk, but risk is fun, no? The earlier Athlons were much easier to change the multipliers on. You can always up the FSB a bit as long as things stay stable. The FSB is changed in BIOS. No program needed. Same with multiplier.

The only real "safety" factor is when you increase voltage to try and go faster, or get the processor too hot. You should check out www.overclockers.com and the forum for more information on your setup, as for programs, search these ones out:
Speedfan - shows voltages/fan speeds/temperatures
Clockgen - allows you to change the FSB of your computer via software
there's tons of other ones, but what you need also partially depends on what chipset your motherboard uses.

It's really not unsafe if you do your research, worst case you shorten the designed life expectancy (typically 10 years), so what, how long do you ACTUALLY use a processor? 3-4 years tops? If you cut its life in half its still worthless when it craps out.

It's different for each processor. Try going to newegg.com, and finding the exact model of your processor. Within the user reviews you might see how high some people have overclocked theirs, but be careful. The maximum overclock varies a lot on what motherboard and RAM you have as well, not just the processor.

I was able to overclock my AMD Opteron 165 1.8 GHz to 2.8 GHz safely.

Try checking this message board for people who have similar CPU/Motherboard/Ram combinations:

The site used to be mainly for DFI motherboards, but has since separated from DFI and welcomes all types of motherboards now.
