Well, let's see -- since everything you see, touch, smell, taste, and hear is the result of chemistry in one form or another, a chemist is useful for understanding the world around us.

Since everything you own is made of chemicals, it's nice to have chemists to understand the properties of those materials so that they can optimize their properties.

Chemistry is called a basic science because it is so utterly instrumental to everything we are and do. And understanding how these things work help make our lives better. Have an infection that required antibiotics? Thank a chemist for those drugs.

Like your plastics? Thank a polymer chemist for making those miracle materials.

Glad you have a bulletproof vest when a bad guy shoots a cop? Thank a chemist for discovering the properties of spider silk, which led to the development of Kevlar.

Like your computer? Thank the chemists that discovered the capabilities of semiconductors.

The list goes on and on . . .
