You should get a cage that he can be in his entire life. It's kind of a waste of money to get a smaller one now, and keep upgrading as he grows. (plus even though he's small now, he still needs his room to be able to run around). Tanks are way too small and not ventilated well at all. I think the best cage for you to get is a rabbit cage. Theyre nice and roomy, and you wont have to worry about 'upgrading' as he grows, because lets face it....animals dont stay babies very long at all.

Please do not get an aquarium for your little cavy. I highly recommend C&C cages (cubes and coroplast as seen above) because they 1. are big enough so that your guinea pig can run around and get enough exercise. 2. they are easy to clean with a vaccum or dust pan 3. it is easy to take your piggies out of the cage because there isnt a top to it. Or find some other make shift cage to use. We are looking into getting a plastic kiddie pool that you can buy at stores like target. They are easy to clean, affordable, and spacey for the guinea pigs. Just make sure they cant jump out of it. Store bought cages are very cramped and expensive, so they dont provide a happy life for your new friend. Good luck and make sure you do your reasearch!!

Do NOT use an aquarium. It has zero ventilation, and is thus not ideal for a small mammal.

You can buy cheap organizational shelving or storage cubes ($20), and go to a sign shop to buy coroplast (usually $15; some places will cut to whatever size you desire; even if they don't, a razorblade can trim the stuff easily). Fold the coroplast 6 inches from each side to build a wall, use some packaging tape to keep it together, and use the shelving/cubes to build a surrounding wall. Use cable ties (any hardware store, $2 for a pack of 20) to secure anything loose.

Voila...$40 and 2 hours of easy work, and you have a sturdy cage that could conceivably be of any shape or size you'll ever require. You now have a cage with excellent ventilation, several lines to hang water bottles from, room for them to walk and run around. and you can always buy more organizational shelving to form a cat/dog proof roof.

Here's a picture of mine before I switched to using fleece for bedding. For size and weight comparison, the cat in the picture was about 2 and a half years-old when I snapped the picture:

When my daughter got her guinea pig last year, be bought a regular old cage from our local pet shop. Just make sure that the cage is big enough for when the pig is an adult so you don't have to buy another one down the line. Don't forget to buy some toys for your pig too. Bird toys and cat balls work well as do pvc pipes(make sure the little guy can't get stuck) and wooden blocks. Good luck!

A 10 gallon aquarium or larger would suffice. You can buy a screen top to fit. I am not a fan of the cages with the screen bottoms, because their little feet are just that, little. I had guinea pigs as pets when I was a teen, and kept cedar shavings on the bottom. It worked well, and Petunia was a happy little guinea pig.

you could start out with a small cage but in order to save money buy a large cage that the pet store recommends with horizontal bars and make sure it doesn't have a wire bottom becuase their little feet can get stuck

I had guinea pig in a fish tank aquarium on a aquarium tank stand. I think this looks nicer than a cage for something inside the house.
