I'm going to work on a new poem soon and I don't know what I should talk about in it. Any ideas?

The poem can be basically on anything. I'm looking for topics on nature and fun stuff. It should be a fun poem.

What kind of topics have you already covered in previous poems? What are your interests? What public do you want to reach? Which poets or other artists are your examples?

If I were you, I would consult the "I Ching". I just asked the Free I Ching Reading website "What should be the topic of my next poem?", choose the traditional yarrow stalk method, and the answer was :

"The future is embodied in Hexagram 9 - Hsiao Ch'u (The Taming Power of the Small): There will be progress and success. We see dense clouds, but no rain coming from our borders in the west."

"The things most apparent, those above and in front, are embodied by the upper trigram Chi'en (Heaven), which is tansforming into Sun (Wind). As part of this process, strength and creativity are giving way to penetration and following."

Clouds, heaven turning into wind, a wind you should follow. What does that say to *you*?

(be careful in keeping your anti-pop-up tool active on the site)

Another solution would be to consult the "Random Article" link on the Wikipedia Main Page, top left. I just got the disambiguation page on "Duo" :

"Duo (Latin for two) may refer to:"

"Duet (music), a pair of singers in music and the musical piece they perform"

Sounds promising for your project!

You could create your own oracle, by cutting up an old dictionary, and pulling slips from a hat. Seriously, that's how we did things in the 60's when we were stumped for inspiration! :-)

Good luck and much serendipity!

PS : I don't believe in oracles, but think they can be handy tools if you don't have a Rorshach Inkblot Test or Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) lying around. ;-)

I wrote a poem about my spare tire in the trunk of the car once for a contest and I won first place. Basically I just wrote about how it was always there for me and I never paid any attention to it, but as soon as I got a flat tire in the middle of the night it saved me.

The funny part was that one of the judges said my poem was a beautiful allegory for Jesus Christ always being there for us even though we don't acknowledge him. I really wasn't even thinking about Jesus at the time I wrote it, but I was glad she interpreted the poem in a fashion that meant something to her.

Just write about something that intrigues you. Ask yourself what doesn't get enough of your attention every day and that no one ever really writes about, and if you detail your feelings in adequate meter you have a poem that is not trite, that means something to people, and that is uniquely your's.

Good luck.

How about a little girl's father leaving for war? That's really sad.
