I live in a medium sized California city - and coyotes have been known to come right downtown and are regularly seen all over town in residential neighborhoods. They are hunting rats, mice, and household pets, especially cats. They also get into dumpsters looking for scraps.

The biggest risk is to people's pets - cats and small dogs. It is important to keep small pets inside, especially at night. Coyotes are beneficial in terms of rodent control.

But - I work at an airport and they can be hazard when they run across the runway. So we need to take steps to control the population for that reason.

I live in the boon docks so to speak and I have a pack of 10 to 15 coyotes that live in the woods around me. I have never had an issue with them, but have lost a couple of cats and the neighbors have lost some chickens and pets as well. Yet, they have never offered to disturb our horses or cows. Coyotes are generally fearful of humans and will run away. General rule, if you are bigger than it is, then you should have no problems. Now, I would not leave a small child or baby unattended where there are coyotes, but as for an adult, I think you will be fine. Just carry a flashlight and if you are really concerned, a cane or walking stick.

A normal coyote will run at the sight of a human. However, they will go after small dogs and cats. Never approach a coyote. They, like most wild mammals, may be carrying rabies.

Coyotes can be found in most cities. Urban coyotes have adopted a very low-lying strategy of hiding, only feeding on trash and lost animals away from houses, etc.

Look at it this way- they have been living there for decades- and they were so well-hidden and shy you never knew it!
