Not all of them do. Some cats are just afraid of bigger dogs. Some cats are afraid of mean old Tom Cats. I love to see a cat go after a dog that think he is the tougher one.

My dogs and cats don't fight, except in fun. Nobody gets hurt. The dog barks, and the cat waves its paws in a defensive manner. Or the cat stalks out in front of the dog, looks at the dog, and makes as if to run; the dog charges, and the cat runs, with the dog after it.
Of course, they know each other.
