Not all of them do. Some cats are just afraid of bigger dogs. Some cats are afraid of mean old Tom Cats. I love to see a cat go after a dog that think he is the tougher one.

My dogs and cats don't fight, except in fun. Nobody gets hurt. The dog barks, and the cat waves its paws in a defensive manner. Or the cat stalks out in front of the dog, looks at the dog, and makes as if to run; the dog charges, and the cat runs, with the dog after it.
Of course, they know each other.

Because dogs bark which scares cats, cats run when they are scared of something and dogs LOVE to chase anything that will run from them.
