A lot of factors contribute to this question. Most notable is the Treaty of Versailles.

When World War I ended, England, France and the United States created the Treaty of Versailles which basically was designed to bring Germany to it's knees.

Germany was not allowed to have a land army of more than 100,000 men, it was not allowed to have a navy or an airforce, it's colonies around the world were removed AND it was forced to pay up all damages caused by the first World War.

To pay the recompense, Germany printed large amounts of money and this led to an inflation and a depression.

If this wasn't bad enough, the Treaty of Versailles also blamed Germany fully for WWI. And Germany didn't even have a choice but to sign it because their other option was to start another war right there and then.

As you can see, after WWI, Germany was not a happy camper. Then Hitler came along. He promised the people that he would literally tear up the hated Treaty of Versailles and return land that previously belonged to Germany (Such as the Czech and Poland.)

Little did anyone else know that what Hitler really wanted was world conquest - he had fooled world leaders of that day that his intentions were really not all that bad. Hence, by the time everybody else realized what was going on, Germany had already marched into Poland and it was too late to stop him. One could only fight him.

In a nutshell, you could say that the cause of WW2 was the thing that initially was meant to prevent it: The Treaty of Versailles.

Of course, this is not the only factor as many factors were involved but it is most certainly significant.

1. Germany aggressively enters land belonging to Germany at the time of WWI in 1936 and the British and French acquiesce. The British do, however decide to rearm and the French start to beef-up the Maginot Line.
2. Germany annexes Austria in 1938 and decide to go into the Sudentland. In the meantime, Chamberlain became Prime Minister and he believed in appeasing Germany for the many injustices proposed on them at Versailles. The Muniich Pact was signed between the French and English leaders along with Germany and Italy. Chamberlain truly believed he he had won peace in his time.
3. Hitler broke his promise and invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939. With the signing of the Soviet -German non-aggression pact, Chamberlain came to the conclusion that war was inevitable. When Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, England and France declared war on Germany on September 1939.

so many things
in europe: germany was pissed off that they suffered so harshly in the treaty of versaille (treaty ending WW1) in which the germans had to take all the blame and pay war reparations, even thoguh the only reson they joined in WW1 was becasue they were allied to Austria, the germans felt cheated and wanted to right the wrongs, there was also a huge surge in nationalism,

the League of Nations was also ineffective at stopping any powers from doing anything

Japan, having proved its military effectiveness in the russo-japanese war 1905-6 felt superior to others and but had little natural resources, sought to increase its power by taking over china (which was weak due to civil strife)
