well, when you sign up for stuff or have to check a check mark
single means not married (because its for legality stuff)...
when talking to a person, you should not say you are single if you are dating someone (have a boyfriend or girlfriend)

actually it means one and unmarried, so technically if you are in a commited realtionship and you're not alone you are not "single" . the common evolution of the word is simply single = available.

on legal documents, it means not married. in a conversation, it means you have no spouse or significant other. also, what do you say when you have neither a spouse nor a significant other?
