A great place to find cool material for tattoos is on PSP groups (Paint Shop Pro). The art found on many of the nicer groups , or depending on the kind of art he wants to do can be found on any number of these groups, mainly found on MSN groups, listed by the hundreds and most by type of content. Most are very easy to sign up for and all that I have seen are free to join. One nice thing, he can learn to print out his sketches first on the PC to show his customers and do any modifications there before doing the real drawings.

You could find him a book with new Tattoo's in it..or as a joke gift get them some rub on Tattoo's

This is going to sound disgusting, and as a vegetarian a agree that it is disgusting, but... you can get pig skin from butchers. Pig skin is very similar to our skin and he can design new tats and practice drawing them on skin as opposed to transfer sheets. I have a friend who is a tattoo artist as well and we always get her pig skin. She loves it.
Gross yet he'll enjoy it. That's what friends are for right?

go to a nice art shop and get a very nice sketch book with some quality pens and then have the sketch book persoanlized or just get em a bag of M & M's

mine is old. the stamp on meat...USDA Grade A Choice. looks just like the meata stamp. and one i saw ywars ago is a pair of pink lips..nice ont he right place. and a bar code is also classy
