I have been a mental health transcriptionist for 14 years and I make $11 an hour. I love my job and the cost of living in my state is very low, but the agency I work at is on thin ice because the state I live in does not allot squat for mental health care.

I guess that answers my question. I was in basic skills math through high school and they tried to put me in pre-algebra, but I failed that. Fortunately when I went to school to become a medical transcriptionist (two-year college), they did not require algebra but they do now: several years ago, I wanted to go back to take Spanish and I had to have three semesters of algebra and I tried to do it, but flunked again. So you could say that I can't do math very well (husband does the checkbook). At least I can type about 140 words per minute so, needless to say, I think I will stay in my current line of work. :-)

You definately need to know the basics of algebra. Since I've gotten certified as a pharm tech, I started Walgreens at 10.75 per hour. The chains don't pay too much, but an independent will pay you up to 15 per hour.

I'm in Beaumont, Tx.

1) You need to know proportions and simple algebra.
2) In Illinois, average starting wage for new uncertified techs is $8 per hour, and for new, certified techs, about $10 per hour. The average wage nationally is $12 per hour.
