The electoral college is an antiquated institution. It no longer serves a purpose and should be abolished. I look forward to the day when someone will present congress with an amendment abolishing it.

The electoral college tries to make it so that the population is represented fairly and evenly. Without it, one could more easily sway the entire country by just convincing one populated area to have a high turnout rate. This way, some state that nobody really keeps up with can have a proportionate say.
Alaskans shouldn't be ignored because it's too cold to travel to a polling place for example. If Alaska had half as many people as New York (to pretend), and Alaska has a low turnout, but everyone who voted all 100% voted for A, and New York has a high turnout with 100% voting for B... with the electoral college, New York is going to have twice as much of a say, and without it, they would have maybe ten times as much of a say.
This way, you can't buy the entire election just by bringing some busses in to New York delivering catered food to all the polling places and making sure everyone shows up to vote.
There are many alternatives, but just having a simple majority does have many problems that are avoided via the electoral college.

Do what you want with future elections but don't re-write history.
It's like saying "if they called holding in the Superbowl, the Patriots wouldn't have beaten the Rams" - - everyone KNEW they didn't call holding in the Superbowl, and if they did, Belichick would have come up with another strategy and nobody knows how it would have worked. Both parties ran ads, placed their get out the vote machines, based on the fact of an electoral system. Voters VOTED based on an electoral system - how many Texas Bush supporters or Bush haters didn't vote because their votes effectively wouldn't count?

Overall, the electoral college has served us well for over 200 years. If it aint broke, don't fix it. Think what might have happened in vrey close races such as 1960 (120,000 votes) or 68 (340,000 votes). The loser could have requested a national recount. Imagine FL times 50.

As long as we don't move toward a "Liberal Democracy" I don't see a problem with what we have now.
To much democracy and we will end up like the inventors of the word.
