I think the right question was: "Who was the first European to reach India by see?". That is because India is a SUBCONTINENT (!). So it isn't invisible for people to see!!! :))

The first European to reach India by see was Vasco da Gama in 1497. He rounded the Cape of Good Hope which is Africa's most southern tip.

Greeks, Romans, Europeans from the Middle Age all knew about India. They had commercial interest there!

India's history and culture is ancient and dynamic, spanning back to the beginning of human civilization. Beginning with a mysterious culture along the Indus River and in farming communities in the southern lands of India.

The Great Alexander invades parts of India (326 B.C.).
Marco Polo visits India (1288).
First voyage of Vasco-da-Gama to Goa (1498).
East India Company is formed (1600).

Probably some Stone Age Homo Sapiens nomad, about 34,000 years ago. That's how far archaeological traces go back for the moment.

India, especially the Indus valley, was one of the first centers of Neolithic civilization in the world.

The Ancient Chinese, Egyptians, Persians, Greeks and Romans all knew about the existence of India. They traded with it, or invaded it. In fact, until the discoveries of the South African mines, *all* diamonds came from India. (The first Indian documents describing diamonds go back to 296 BCE)

Part of the Silk Road ran over India.

And Buddhism started in India.

So any ancient European or Chinese who wanted to buy or sell diamonds or silk, knew about India. All Buddhists in Asia knew about India. It didn't had to be discovered.

When the Europeans first came to India, it was to cut out the Arabian middlemen.

Da Gama was Portuguese. The Indians wined and dined him then said to him "lets our 2 countries trade." So Vasco says "great idea" thanks everyone, goes back to Portugal and gets a fleet of warships, returns to India and says "I was only kidding, Stick-Em-UP." The Indians had no defense against gunpowder. De Gama in true Iberian fashion did what Columbus, Cortes, Pizarro and all the rest did. He lied to the natives, stealed them blind, killed their leaders and enslaved them. Then he brought them Catholicism.
