this happens almost always around my period. is this like cramps? thanks

This sounds like ovulation (the two weeks before your period) pain. It can be very sharp when it occurs.
I would recommend checking with your dr though to be on the safe side.

It could be ovulation pain or menstruation pain but it could be something more severe go to a doctor just to be safe. With all that's out there now better safe then sorry.
