The movement had a broad base of support among various religious denominations and secular organizations, among them the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, the American Friends Service Committe, the ACLU, Jewish charities of all sorts, and Students for a Democratic Society (SDS). The claim by the Black Panthers that some whites were sympathizers with the struggle of black people is a grotesque lie. Video footage of the march at Selma will show plenty of white people getting clubbed over the head.
