The answer is amino acids. There are 20 amino acids, more in other organisms, and when they are strung together you get a polypeptide. This alone can be a protein, or it can associate with other polypeptides to form a larger complex. The shape of this protein is almost exclusive to the amino acids that make it up.

Amino acids. The unique sequence of amino acids determine where bonds will be formed between different parts of the protein and hence how it will fold into a globular shape or twist into a spiral or helix or form long parallel or anti-parallel chains giving what is called a beta pleated sheet. The sequence of amino acids constitute its primary structure.

c. amino acids.

Proteins belong to a class of organic compound called polyamides. Polyamides are polymers where the monomer units are held together by amide groups. The monomer units in proteins are called amino acids. The amide group -CO-NH- joining two amino acids is often called a peptide link, so scientists sometimes call single polymer chains made from amino acids polypeptides. Proteins can be made from a single polypeptide chain or from several polypeptide chains joined together. Only twenty amino acids are commonly found in proteins, and the structure of the protein depends on the sequence of amino acids

amino acids because the combinations in which the amino acids form can make up different proteins
