It is a sedimentry rock made from the shells of fossilised sea creatures.
Chemically it is calcium carbonate
It is slightly soluble in acidic water ( rainwater is usually slightly acidic through the disolved co2)

Colin and Jinx have some good answers, but the real question is: What kind of limestone? A micrite is a lot different from a grainstone which is different from a sparite. The state capitol in Austin, Texas is made of an oolitic grainstone that looks identical to a sandstone (and sandstones are siliclastics, not carbonates).

It varies in color. Sometimes it'll have shells in it (this is commonly called coquina) and sometimes it won't. You'll have a pretty good reaction when you drop dilute HCl on it. If you lick it, it'll taste slightly salty due to the trace amounts of halides in it. This taste is also due to its high solubility in water.
It's a chemical sedimentary rock that commonly forms at the bottom of ocean basins where there is low amounts of Oxygen. The darker the color, the less Oxygen was available during the formation.
