There isn't an Astronaut Corps, per say. Like someone else said previously, NASA astronauts are usually either military or scientists. Those involved in actually piloting the spacecraft are very decorated military pilots, while those that are along for the ride to perform other functions in space are usually, noted Phd. chemists, biologists, astronomers, physicists, etc..

Also, not just anyone can go to space. Your body has to be able to handle it, so even most that start training to be astronauts are rejected on technicalities. One of the most common is that you can't get consistently sick under the high G forces associated with a shuttle launch.

So, all you have to do to be an astronaut is go to school for about 8-12 years to be a scientist, finish in the top 1% in your class, spend another 5-10 years to become the foremost expert in your field, and have the proper physical tools to adapt to space.

OR, you can join the navy or air force, be in the top 1% in all if your various training classes, have the proper physical tools to be a pilot, spend 8-10 years becoming one of the top 8-10 pilots the US military has to offer, have the proper physical tools to adapt to space.

OR, you can get lucky and get picked as an outstanding civilian.

But your best bet to go to space is to become a billionaire and just pay for it!!

You have to be a VERY motivated person. There are not many specific criteria, but the process is EXTREMELY competitive, so it mostly boils down to working harder, trying harder and winning out over thousands of other wannabes. Most astronauts are military pilots, PhD scientists or both. Read the source for more detail.

The first thing you need to do is get a PH.D in physics or related degree's and try to apply in the air force as a pilot that will help you a lot! When you have achieved all these things go to NASA and try to qualify, you have to pass all the health-physical tests and all those stuff!

Check out the NASA website they give you all the information to qualify as an astronaut
