I'm trying to hook-up an undergravel filter using an air pump. I bought the tank used but I have the air pump, the air tube, an airstone. I can't get the tube to go through the top of the riser on the undergravel filter. No websites go into detail about how it works and I got the filter without directions. What do I do to make the filter...work??

the tank is one of those mini bowfronts. It's 2.5 gallons.

I know exactly where you are at on this one! Most web pages won't go thru this since more people are using power head not air lines.

Did the filter come with hard plastic SMALL tubes? (These should slide in the top of the larger tube) Usually the air line will add to this. If not you may need to get smaller tubing. You can connect the line to the pump with a air line connector. You don't need the air stone. If worse comes to worse, you can use a razor and scrape the small opening at the top large enough to fit the line you have now. Push your air hose all the way to the bottom of the tube to the bottom of the tank.

If you needmore help feel free to im or email me.

Does the bottom filter plate have a larger dia. tube coming up to the top?
Does this tube have a cap on the top with a small hole in the center ?
You take the cap off and feed the small tube ( that is attached to the pump) feed it through the small hole in the cap, then attach the stone, feed the tube with the air stone to the bottom of the larger tube until it is just above the plate.
Hope this helps.

If I understand your problem correctly, you are missing a piece of rigid plastic tubing.

From the air pump, you will have some length of flexible airline tubing (like this: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/15795/product.web ) - this won't fit into the top of the undergravel flow deflector (the angled piece that sits at the top of the tube where you can insert a carbon filter) because the flexible airline is too thick (top piece will look something like this: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/14689/product.web )

You'll need to get a piece of rigid tubing (like the 3rd and 4th item in this photo: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/15808/product.web ). Connect the airline from your pump to this, slide the rigid tubing through the hole in the elbow, then attach a small piece of flexible tubing at the other end to connect your airstone.

If the larger tube doesn't connect to the filter plate, maybe the uplift tube is the wrong one for your filter - there should be three prongs at the bottom that snap into three holes in the plate, or just a smooth tube that fits into a "collar" attached to the plate itself - see photos: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/14686/product.web
