Not sure what state you are in, however in Pennsylvania there is only local licenses, no state license. Now, some of the local licenses are interchangable. For example, I hold a masters license in Pottstown, Harrisburg recognises this license and with it all i need to do is apply for a harrisburg license and pay the fee in order to recieve my harrisburg license. Reading doesnt recognise the Pottstown license, but it does recognise the harrisburg licenese , with it all i need to do is apply and pay the fee for my reading license. It is essentialy a stupid situation, but those lincenses do come in handy when applying for a job or owning your own business.

Some cities, like Philadelphia does not recognise any licensing authority other than their own, and will not issue a license without successful completion of their test.

Every state is different with their licensing rules. Your best bet is to check with the local code enforcement officer for the area in which you wish to obtain your license. As for your insurance, if you are doing mainly residential i would suggest no less than 2 million in liability insurance, double that for commercial, and if doing industrial i would suggest no less than 10 million. I carry 2 million in liability and my annual insurance premium is $535.00. Erie insurance carries what is called the "five star contractors insurance" this is what i carry and it is excellent isurance, my premium also gives me $5,000.00 in tool coverage. Good Luck.

You'll have to take the test given by the licensing agency in your state. If you pass it then you will be licensed and have to carry insurance. Ask an electrician with his license, for details. I have never gotten mine, I thought about it once, but I was an industrial electrician and never needed a license. I figured I didn't need the extra expense. I also was a union journeyman with a maintenance ticket. Good luck.

CHECK WITH YOUR STATE TO SEE IF YOU CAN BE "GRANDFATHERED" IN. IF YOU HAVE PROOF THAT YOU HAVE BEEN DOING ELECTRICAL WORK FOR 20 YEARS, SOME STATES JUST REQUIRE A WRITTEN TEST
